When to use this template
Your indie game is close to a demo or launch, and you need store page copy that is clear and honest without spending days on it.
Tools it works with
Works with any capable chat assistant.
How to use it
- Fill in the game brief in Prompt 1. List only features that are really in the game or confirmed.
- Send Prompt 1 and pick the positioning line you like best (or combine two).
- Send Prompts 2 to 4 in the same chat, pasting your chosen positioning line where asked.
- Send Prompt 5 to catch promises that the game does not keep, then edit the final copy in your own voice.
- Paste the short description into Steamworks and check its character counter, because the editor enforces the limit.

# Prompt pack: Steam and itch.io store page copy for an indie game
Use this with any capable chat assistant. Fill in the game brief once, then run the prompts one by one in the same chat.
Always edit the result yourself: the AI does not know your game, and store copy must describe only what is really in it.

## Prompt 1: Game brief and positioning
You are an experienced indie game marketer who writes clear, honest store pages. I will give you a brief about my game. Do not invent features, modes, content amounts, awards or reviews that are not in the brief. If something important is missing, ask me instead of making it up.
Game brief:
- Title: [GAME TITLE]
- Genre and subgenre: [e.g. "roguelite deckbuilder"]
- Core loop in one sentence: [WHAT THE PLAYER DOES, MINUTE TO MINUTE]
- Hook — what makes it different: [THE ONE THING]
- Setting, tone and art style: [e.g. "cozy, hand-drawn, rainy seaside town"]
- Main features (only real, shipped or confirmed ones): [LIST]
- Comparable games players might know: [2–3 TITLES] (these are for positioning only)
- Target player: [WHO WILL LOVE THIS]
- Platforms and status: [e.g. "Windows, demo available, full release planned"]
- Session length, players, controller support: [DETAILS]
- Price model: [free, paid, free demo, or not decided]
First, give me:
1. Three one-line positioning statements in the form "[Game] is a [genre] where you [core action] to [goal], with a twist: [hook]".
2. The three strongest selling points from my brief, and one point that is unclear or weak and how I could make it concrete.
3. Your questions, if anything important is missing.

## Prompt 2: Steam short description
Using the positioning I chose — [PASTE YOUR CHOSEN LINE] — write 5 options for the Steam short description.
Requirements:
- Plain text only: no line breaks, bullet points, emoji or formatting.
- Stay well under 300 characters (Steamworks limits this field to a few hundred characters; check the counter in the Steamworks editor). Show the character count for each option.
- Mention the genre early, and lead with what the player does and why it is special.
- No time-based phrases such as "now available", "coming soon" or a date, because they go out of date.
- No claims I did not give you (no "award-winning", no review quotes, no content numbers that are not in the brief).
---
## Prompt 3: Steam "About This Game" section
Write the "About This Game" section for the Steam page.
Structure:
1. An opening paragraph of 2–3 sentences that sells the fantasy and the hook.
2. Three to five feature blocks. Each block has a short, punchy heading (3–6 words) and 1–3 sentences that describe what the player does and feels, not just a list of systems.
3. A closing line that tells the player what to do next, without time-based wording (for example "Add it to your wishlist to follow development").
Style: concrete verbs, second person ("you"), short paragraphs that are easy to skim on a phone, and no clichés such as "epic adventure like never before". Mark each spot where a GIF or screenshot should go, as [GIF: what it shows]. Use only features from my brief.
---
## Prompt 4: itch.io page
Now adapt the copy for itch.io, where pages are often more personal and informal.
Write:
1. A tagline for the short description field: one short, specific sentence.
2. A page body with: a 2-sentence pitch, a "How to play" section with the controls, a "Features" list, a short, honest "About the developer" note in my voice ([1–2 FACTS ABOUT YOU]), and a "Status" section that says what is finished and what is planned, clearly separated.
3. Ten suggested tags that describe genre, mood and mechanics. Only suggest tags that match the brief.
---
## Prompt 5: Final check
Review all the copy above as a skeptical player and as a store reviewer:
- List any sentence that promises something not in my brief, and rewrite it.
- List any vague phrase and replace it with something concrete.
- Check that the short description reads well even if a player sees only that and the capsule image.
- Give me a final, clean version of each piece, ready to paste.
Tips
- Steam's own guidance says the short description is plain text and should avoid time-based phrases such as "now available".
- Read the copy out loud. If a sentence could describe any game in your genre, make it more specific.
